The Battlefield Was Hell: Black Soldiers Write and Paint WW1

An Art Exchange Event in Nottingham focusing on the experiences of African American soldiers in WW1.

Due to discriminatory and racist practices, only 20% of African American soldiers saw combat with the rest living and dying as labourers in conditions akin to slavery .

Join academic and specialist on slavery, Celeste-Maries Bernier, who will share materials – paintings, sketches, diaries, autobiographies, photographs, letters, prints, portraits, sculptures and documentary clips – to begin to recover this lost Black military experience.
