Jody East, Creative Programme Curator, Royal Pavilion, Brighton, will be giving a talk on The Royal Pavilion, Brighton and its Indian connection during the Great War, in New Delhi, India.
Ms. East will deliver a talk about Brighton Royal Pavilion, which served as a hospital for Indian troops during the First World War – treating over 4000 between 1914 and 1916.
She will be speaking at the United Service Institution, New Delhi, on the 5th of February 2014 at 11:00am and at Chandimandir, Chandigarh, on the 7th of February.
The Royal Pavilion is in the city of Brighton and Hove, on England’s south coast. Inspired by Indian architecture, it was built between 1787 and 1823.
One of the objectives of the talks is to try to make contact with descendants of those soldiers who were admitted to hospitals in the Brighton area during 1915-16, in order to track down any oral memories, letters, records or memorabilia in their possession.
It is hoped that this may contribute to a “greater understanding of what the Indian soldiers felt and thought of their experiences in an alien land far away from home”.
