A series of events will be held in the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo, to mark the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The Director of Sarajevo Museums, Amra Madarevic, spoke to Tanya Bonny of Centenary News about plans for an exhibition at the city’s museum dedicated to the Austro-Hungarian period.
It will be focused on three years, starting with 1863 when Franz Ferdinand was born. It will also cover 1914, the year of the Archduke’s assassination and the outbreak of the First World War; and 2014, one hundred years on.
The venture is being organised in partnership with the City Cultural Network in Graz – the Austrian birthplace of Franz Ferdinand. Ms Madarevic told Centenary News that Sarajevo had been associated with conflicts in the past. But the aim of the exhibition, at the Museum of Sarajevo 1878-1918, was to project a picture of peaceful co-existence, and to show that the city had “never wanted to be anything but the messenger of peace”.
