Russian politician calls for conference to mark the Centenary of the First World War

The Russkiy Mir Foundation has reported that a Russian politician has called for a “major academic and political conference” to be held to mark the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma (the lower house of the Russian parliament) Committee on International Affairs, Vyacheslav Nikonov, made the suggestion for a conference and stated that the First World War is overshadowed by the Russian Civil War (1917-1922) that followed and the Bolsheviks’ consideration of the First World War as an “imperial war”.
