The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has announced that three unknown First World War South African soldiers will be re-interred in Belgium.
The remains will be reburied on the 9th July 2013 at 10:00am in a service open to the public.
The ceremony has been organised by the South African Embassy in Belgium, alongside the South African Defence Force.
The remains of the three soldiers were discovered near a brick factory in Zonnebeke at the end of 2011.
It is likely that the soldiers were never formally buried and that “their graves were covered during battle by mortar/artillery fire”.
The location of the remains, as well as objects discovered nearby – including unit insignia – mean that the three unknown soldiers have been accepted as belonging to the 4th Regiment South African Infantry.
