Athy Heritage Centre-Museum in Ireland opens an exhibition of paintings by artist Paul Woods on September 7th 2014 as part of its First World War Centenary events.
More than 2,000 men from Athy and district, in County Kildare, served in the British Army during the war.
Warfare and conflict are the predominant themes in Paul Woods’ work. He believes that events of the past, though often unresolved or misrepresented, have a great influence on our understanding of society and community now.
Through his art he aims to deal with past and present traumas from history and tries to engage viewers in the process of deconstructing generally accepted opinions.
Paul Woods will be giving a talk – entitled ‘Visual Encounters with the Great War- Contemporary approaches to painting World War 1’ on 19th September 2014 at 7 pm.
‘Painting the Great War’ runs at Athy Heritage Centre-Museum until October 7th 2014.
