New exhibition opening at the Kimball World War I Memorial in West Virginia, USA

The ‘Forgotten Legacy’ exhibition at the Kimball World War I Memorial in West Virginia, USA

This memorial, situated in a small town in West Virginia, is the first memorial built in the country that specifically honours the role of African-American soldiers of the First World War. This memorial was established in order to remember the role of those soldiers whose importance has been widely forgotten in popular memory.

The memorial is located in what used to be a prominently African-American area and aims to highlight the ‘forgotten legacy’ of the soldiers who contributed to the war effort.

The memorial’s newest exhibit, ‘Forgotten Legacy: Soldiers of the Coalfields’ aims to educate the American population about a community that formed the backbone of the war economy throughout the conflict.
