Journalist Ronan McGreevy of The Irish Times reports that new details have been released by the UK National Archives on a German gas attack on Irish First World War soldiers.
The attack took place in France at the same time as fighting during the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916.
As part of the National Archives’ unit war diaries digitisation project, details have been made available about the German poison gas attack between the 27th – 29th April 1916 on trenches held by British soldiers from the predominantly Irish 16th Division at Hulluch.
