International Effort To Map Gallipoli Battleground

A team of Archaeologists are using GPS and WW1-era maps to create a definitive record of Gallipoli’s battlegrounds.

Under the leadership of Antonio Sagona, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Melbourne, a group of archaeologists from Turkey, Australia and New Zealand are combining 21st Century technology with original WW1 maps to update a survey of the area-not done since 1919.

During the Gallipoli Campaign, 70,000 Allies and 20,000 Turkish soldiers lost their lives, making the area of national importance to all countries involved in the current survey.
