The University of Buckingham and the Sarajevo School of Science & Technology are organising an international conference for the First World War Centenary.
The conference entitled ‘The Significance and Legacy of the Great War’ will take place in Sarajevo on the 26th-28th June 2014. It will be held at the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology’s newly built campus.
The conference will address – but is not limited to – the following major themes:
The Origins of the Great War Reconsidered: Including recent debate focussing on the aims and ambitions of the belligerent states.
The Rise of Nationalism since 1914: Including the fall of multi-ethnic empires; the rise of Nazism; the creation of independent nation-states including Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and Israel.
The Economic Consequences of the Great War: Including human losses; reparations; the role of women; trade unions; the increased importance of ‘the state.’
The Century of Genocide and Collective Guilt: Including the Armenian question; the Holocaust of the Jews; Bosnia; Rwanda; Darfur.
International Security from Versailles to Dayton: Including the creation and failure of the League of Nations; the United Nations Organisation and its role in conflict mitigation; international peace-building.
Conference Fees
For those attending the conference, a €150 registration fee will be charged. This will be waived for those who are accepted to present at the conference.
Other participants will be expected to meet their own costs of travel and accommodation, but will be given assistance in arranging suitable accommodation in Sarajevo.
