A conference on ‘War and tourism’ during the First World War will be held at the Touriseum Trauttmansdorff – the South Tyrol Museum Tourism – in northern Italy.
The conference, with speakers from Italy, Austria, Germany, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, will be held on the 7th – 9th November 2013.
The conference will examine the influence of the First World War on the development of tourism in the Alpine region.
Modern South Tyrol was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1919 when it was annexed by Italy.
When Italy entered the First World War in 1915, what was then the County of Tyrol in Austria-Hungary, was transformed from a resort area into an important theatre of conflict.
Tourism in the area abruptly came to a halt; hotels became barracks or hospitals.
The conference will serve as a pre-cursor and exploration of ideas for a temporary exhibition in 2015 at the Tourism Museum provisionally entitled ‘War and Tourism’.
