Controversy over £500,000 restoration of First World War ship for Centenary

The Southern Daily Echo highlights the diverging opinions over Hampshire Council in England’s decision to allocate £500,000 to restore a First World War ship.

The restoration “comes at a time when the council has made £100m savings over the past two years and axed 1,700 jobs”.

After criticism that money should be spent elsewhere, council leader Roy Perry said that HMS M33 Minerva was a “major and rare vessel” and “was part of Britain’s maritime history and a tourist attraction”.
