Researcher and Centenary News volunteer Andrew Arnold is conducting a detailed study of those whose names appear on the war memorial in Carshalton.
Around 2,000 men from th.e English town of Carshalton served in the First World War. Of these 243 were killed, 19 on the first day of the Battle of the Somme (I July 1916) alone.
Researcher Andrew Arnold is conducting a detailed study of those whose names appear on the memorial, using census records, local and national newspaper reports, battalion war diaries and many other sources.
His work is building up a wide-ranging picture of how the war affected one small town and the lasting effect of the conflict on the people who lived there.
