A display of 62,000 poppies, projections of First World War images, and a beam of light are among events announced by the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice.
The handcrafted poppies, representing Australian lives lost in WW1, will be exhibited in the Memorial’s grounds from October 5-November 11.
In the days leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, images from the AWM’s collections will be screened onto the building.
Then on the evening of November 10, a beam of light will be directed towards the Australian Parliament House, symbolising the link between political freedoms and the sacrifice of those who’ve fought to defend them.
The AWM’s five-week commemorative programme for the Centenary of the Armistice culminates on November 11 with the National Ceremony of Remembrance. For details, see Honour Their Spirit, on the Australian War Memorial website.
