‘Above the Battlefield’ – new videos explore Western Front from the air

The military historian, Paul Reed, has started filming First World War battlefields from the air for his new website WW1 Revisited.

‘Above the battlefield’ explores sites of the Great War using video from a ‘Phantom’ drone.

Prowse Point Cemetery, close to the scene of the 1914 Christmas truce in Belgium, is featured among the first films.

The video shows trenches reconstructed near Ploegsteert as part of preparations for the unveiling of a Centenary memorial by European football’s governing body, UEFA, on December 11th 2014.

Paul Reed has also filmed two cemeteries on the Somme as a ‘small taster for what is to come in 2015.’

He says: “The traces of the Great War are found all over the Western Front but at times it is hard to see them properly. By filming them from above this will add a new dimension to our understanding of the battlefields as they are today.”
