South West Artwork is to create a sound archive which will allow people to hear the voices of British & Commonwealth prisoners of war.
Having received permission from The British Library and Humboldt University of Berlin South West Artwork will be broadcasting the sound archive via a public arts commission piece, “The Auditory Cenotaph”.
The “WWI Voices Project” will be comprised “of some 200 recordings of British Empire prisoners-of-war, speaking in English and Scots, as well as Urdu and West African languages, made in Germany during the Great War”.
The project has been developed over the last five years and will be completed in time for the Centenary of the First World War in 2014.
