In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Professor Jay M. Winter explains how the First World War changed the culture of grieving, and how that legacy is present in modern day mourning.
“The notion of remembering the dead became critical when there was… no body to mourn… The names were things that mattered… In war memorials you’ll see them… It is a way of bringing bodies back home in a metaphorical sense. Those names defined families that were empty, that had absences”.
