‘Why we should remember the bravery of World War One journalists’

Date of publication: 21/06/2013

An article in The Independent, written by Richard Evans, considers the “bravery” of journalists during the First World War.

The article analyses the experiences of journalists on the front line and the challenges and restrictions imposed upon them during the conflict, as well as drawing parallels with modern (particularly British) journalistic practice:

“For one thing, honouring the bravery of those who took part in the War is one of the reasons for marking the centenary. But more than that, the experience of reporters in 1914 is something that is especially worth celebrating at a time when most of the stories we hear about journalists are negative ones”.
