Photographer Mike St Maur Sheil’s photographic work gives a fascinating insight into WW1 battlefields.
Sheil’s project documenting WW1 Battlefield sites in photographic form started after a trip to Dunkirk with his father, who had served in the London Irish Rifles in 1940. He says of his photographic work in the present-day surroundings of past battlefield sites: “For me, the challenge is to combine the elements of light and land to document the dramatic history of these fields.”
The above photograph is representative of Sheil’s work by placing imagery into its historical context. Of the photograph, he says: “On Sept 25th 1915 the London Irish Rifles launched their attack at the Battle of Loos by kicking a football across No Mans Land. It is shown here, 95 years later, on its ‘home ground’ in the position of the LIR trenches.”
