The Voice of Russia has announced that it will create a “virtual museum of World War I” to mark the Centenary of the conflict.
The aim of the new web portal is to “highlight the events of [the conflict] as fully as possible”, with plans for it to be completed by August 2014.
The Voice of Russia states that it is launching the project in co-operation with the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Russian War History Society, the Rossotrudnichestvo Agency and “multiple foreign partners”.
The Chairman of The Voice of Russia, Andrey Bystritsky, said that the web portal is “a unique project for Russia”.
“It is unique both from the technological point of view, because we are collecting materials in all electronic formats that exist now, and also because we are publishing many materials which, because of a number of circumstances, have not been accessible for both Russians and foreigners until now”.
“Secret archives”
The portal will include maps of “important battles” during the conflict, primary source documents, eyewitness accounts, photographs, films from the period and other resources.
The Voice of Russia states that “many of these materials will be withdrawn from secret archives and made public for the first time”.
It has also announced that it has secured the support of – and will collaborate with – “some of the world’s leading media organisations”, including the European Broadcasting Union.
The web portal will be made available in English, French, German and Russian.
The first stage of the project is expected to be complete by December 2013.
