Die Welt looks at the significance of Verdun and the reason for which it became what the author calls a mythic symbol of the meaninglessness and brutality of modern warfare in the Twentieth Century.

“In February 1916, the battle for Verdun began. The German plan was to bleed the French dry, but this plan was mistaken…with catastrophic consequence: by December 1916 more than 300,000 German and French soldiers had died in Verdun…Although other battles had similar death tolls, Verdun became a symbol of the brutality and meaningless of modern warfare…”
