The Australian publishes an article which argues that the First World War must be considered its own historical context and not “through the prism of the Second”.
“So far, the debate over the commemoration has focused on the competing interpretations of the poets (condemning a futile, immoral calamity) and the military historians (recalling a justifiable war). It is time to deploy the archaeologists of memory, to evoke an utterly different era, uncoloured by our knowledge of what came after”.
“The centenary will succeed only if we can see it from 1914 as well as 2014”.
