In an article for The New York Times, Margaret Macmillian explores the parallels between the build up to the First World War and the modern day.
Considering themes such as globalisation, political extremism and the rise of China, she assesses why the world is still “haunted” by the conflict:
“We have good reason to glance over our shoulders. If we cannot determine how one of the most momentous conflicts in history happened, how can we hope to avoid another such catastrophe in the future?”
