An initiative for schools promoting awareness of First World War shipwrecks has been launched by the United Nations agency, UNESCO.
‘Safeguarding the Underwater Cultural Heritage of the First World War’ features a range of educational resources that can be downloaded online to help teachers and students.
‘Naval warfare was an important part of the conflict and ancient shipwrecks of this period are today a very tangible witness of this time’, UNESCO says.
In 2014, the UN agency marked the First World War Centenary with a scientific conference in Belgium, warning of the need to protect wreck sites from looting and commercial exploitation.
The latest announcement is part of UNESCO’s ‘Heritage for Peace and Reconcilation Education Initiative’, raising awareness of the impact of war and the need for peace.
