Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh paid tribute to the dead of the First World War during a visit to the Tower of London’s ceramic poppy fields on October 16th 2014.
A wreath was laid as the Queen and the Duke stood among the hundreds of thousands of poppies which now surround the Tower for the installation, ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.’
Volunteers are ‘planting’ 888,246 ceramic poppies, one for each member of the British or colonial forces killed during the Great War.
The last poppy will be installed on Armistice Day 2014.
During their visit to the Tower, the Queen and Prince Philip met the installation’s creator, the ceramic artist, Paul Cummins.
The poppies are being sold in aid of six service charities; Combat Stress, Coming Home, the Confederation of Service Charities (COBSEO), Help for Heroes, the Royal British Legion and SSAFA. Details can be found here.
