Speaking at the London School of Economics, Professor Dominic Lieven delivered a lecture which considered the reasons for which the Russian Empire went to war in 1914.
Professor Lieven is senior research fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge.
Professor Lieven tackled factors which impacted Russia’s entry into the conflict ranging from dwindling influence in the Balkans to the role of Tsar Nicholas II and key figures in the Foreign Ministry, as well as the “obsession with England” in understanding the causes of the First World War.
Professor Lieven also took the opportunity to explain the development of his own academic thought on the subject over his career.
