Peter Francis, Head of External Communications at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, speaks at Centenary Conference.
Mr. Francis was speaking at the Schools and the Great War Centenary Conference – held on Thursday 14th March 2013 at Wellington College in Berkshire, which was filmed by Centenary News.
Mr. Francis spoke about the challenges of teaching people, particularly younger people, about the First World War.
However, Mr. Francis was encouraged by what he describes as the “huge appetite to remember the Centenary of the First World War”, as he presented statistics that showed a majority of people surveyed in the United Kingdom felt it was important to commemorate the Centenary.
Mr. Francis continued to detail the role the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will play in commemorations.
Also under discussion was the very nature of remembrance, as Mr. Francis contrasted public remembrance of the Battle of Waterloo (1815), with that of the First World War.
