The No Glory in War 1914-1918 campaign group questions “plans to spend £55m on a “truly national commemoration”” to mark the Centenary in Britain.
The group highlights the suffering “that was driven by big powers’ competition for influence around the globe, and caused a degree of suffering all too clear in the statistical record of 16 million people dead and 20 million wounded”.
In May 2013 the campaign was launched with an open letter signed by a wide ranging group of figures from British public life highlighting the “devastation” the conflict caused and criticising UK national plans to mark the 100 year anniversary of the conflict.
The 49 signatories included actors, authors, directors and politicians. Amongst them were the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, the former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and British actors Jude Law, Alan Rickman and Patrick Stewart.
