British musician and former Dire Straits guitarist, Mark Knopfler, has performed a guitar version of the Last Post as part of Superact’s First World War Centenary music project, The Last Post.
Mark, who grew up in the Northumberland town of Blyth, dedicated his performance to the 17,000 Northumberland Fusiliers killed during the conflict.
Starting on November 4th 2014, the Last Post will be played on different instruments at 200 community musical projects around the UK reflecting the impact of the First World War
Following his Last Post performance, Mark Knopfler said: “The First World War left its mark on families throughout the UK, and throughout the world. It is important to remember the sacrifices made, and to think about why wars happen.
“I’m playing the Last Post for 17,000 young men of the Northumberland Fusiliers who lost their lives. You too can remember through music with The Last Post project.”
Author and comedian, Ben Elton is also backing the project. He said:
“I would play the Last Post for my German grandfather who spent four years fighting in the trenches. Twenty years later he was a Jewish refugee on the run from the country he had served, seeking sanctuary from the country he had fought.
“It is important to remember the war and its impact on soldiers and civilians alike. The Last Post project is an invitation for everyone to take part in the First World War Centenary. Get involved!”
Mark’s performance can be viewed on Superact’s YouTube channel, and more information on The Last Post project can be found on their website.
