Kent Online reports that a Liberal Democrat local councillor, Gary Fuller, has started a petition opposing a £200,000 grant of taxpayers’ money towards constructing the Step Short Memorial Arch to honour First World War soldiers in Folkestone.
Mr. Fuller said that “the remembrance of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces during wartime is extremely important”, but that using the money to renovate the area instead would be “a far more fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by the armed forces than any physical monument”.
