A “forgotten” front of the Great War, the southern shore of the Mediterranean has been the setting for a little known story, mostly told from colonial sources: “gun-running” to “dissident” peoples in French-ruled North Africa. This book shows the importance of anti-colonial resistance, supported by men, and sometimes women, who smuggled in money and weapons from Germany and its Ottoman ally; and the strategies adopted by the French colonial authorities to thwart the massive arming of “dissident” populations.
The author, Francesco Correale, is a historian of French colonisation in the Western Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia). He’s based at the Université François-Rabelais in the city of Tours. La Grande Guerre des Trafiquants is written in French.
