Britain’s Royal Navy will hold a parade and remembrance service in the Southsea district of Portsmouth on May 31st 2016 as part of commemorations marking the Battle of Jutland Centenary.
More than 100 sailors will march to Southsea Common for the 2pm service at Portsmouth Naval Memorial, led by the band of the Royal Marines.
Relatives of those who served at Jutland in 1916 will be especially welcome to attend. They should contact the event organiser, Commander Andy Green. Details can be found on the Royal Navy website.
Commander Green said: “There have been many commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of World War One battles, but this is the one key date that allows a singular focus on the Royal Navy.”
“We are hoping that the people of Portsmouth turn out in their numbers to line the route or attend the service and ceremony.”
The event includes a traditional drumhead ceremony, with drums piled to form an altar.
There will also be readings by children involved in the UK First World War schools’ project, Never Such Innocence.
