The grandson of the British commander-in-chief at Jutland has narrated a new video describing key episodes in the biggest naval battle of the First World War.
Nick Jellicoe discusses the tactics, manoeuvres and controversies of the clash in a 24-minute film released on his Jutland 1916 website.
Animated maps, graphics and contemporary images of the ships and men involved are used to illustrate crucial moments of the battle as they unfolded in the North Sea.
Some 250 British and German warships fought a series of engagements off the coast of Denmark from the afternoon on May 31st to the early hours of June 1st 1916.
Nick Jellicoe addresses the criticism of his grandfather Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet, that followed a battle costing the British greater losses than the Germans.
He discusses how Germany, faced with continued British naval dominance, again embarked on a campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917.
