Herts at War 1914-1918 is holding a launch event for the ‘Roll of Honour’ aspect of its efforts to mark the Centenary of the First World War.
Herts at War 1914-1918 is a “community led project to commemorate the diverse experiences of [the English county of] Hertfordshire during the First World War”.
The ‘Roll of Honour’ launch event highlights the research being carried out into the 21,000 names that feature on over 700 First World War memorials throughout the towns and villages of Hertfordshire.
The project launch will take place in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire on 9th November 2013 from 12:00pm – 6:00pm.
Herts at War 1914-1918 aims to bring the Centenary of the First World War “into public view and provide an opportunity for county residents to become involved in, and contribute to the project as a whole”.
Local MPs, county councillors, authors and project partners will be present at the launch event.
Events
The following organisations will be present/events will take place at the launch:
• The Military Ancestry Road Show (MARS) – Experts will be analysing medals, photographs and family heirlooms, which members of the public are encouraged to bring with them.
• Battle Honours Limited – Organisers of trips to First World War battlefields, which “follow the lives of the Hertfordshire soldiers” will be at the launch.
• Herts at War 1914-1918 Roll of Honour Team
• Historian Richard Knight will be re-enacting the life of a British Tommy
• Archant Newspaper Group – Producing reprints of local newspaper from 99 years ago.
• 254 Medical Regiment – An exploration of the similarities and differences in today’s British Army.
• Object handling sessions – Opportunities for members of the public to handle objects from the First World War.
• National Centre for the Great War – Representatives of a replica trench network being created locally will be present.
• Herts at War Educational Outreach Programme – Presentation of ideas about bringing the First World War into local schools.
• Bedfordshire Regiment memorial – An opportunity to see the planned new memorial to be erected.
• The event will also be partnered with Letchworth Collectors Market – A newly formed event with sellers including militaria and antiques.
