French Ministry of Defence First World War research portal

The French Ministry of Defence has developed a First World War online portal to aid those carrying out research into the conflict.

The portal includes access to an online database of digitised records of 1.3 million soldiers who died in France during the First World War.

A second database details approximately 74,000 records of military aircraft personnel from the conflict, including the flying crews (pilots, observers, flight engineers, machine gunners and photographers) and the ground staff (mechanics, meteorologists, sailmakers, carpenters or members of the commissariat).

Online unit diaries are also accessible online. Logs of operations, campaign and account notebooks and on-board navigational logs for military units during the First World War are searchable.

Online access has also been provided to regimental histories of the conflict.

The resource is available in English, French, German and Spanish.
