Flemish €20m Centenary Investment

Date of publication: 10/11/2011

The Flemish Government is to invest 20m on restoring monuments and creating new exhibitions, ahead of an influx in visitors to Belgium for the WW1 Centenary.

Announcing the investment plans during a trip to Britain, the Flemish Tourism Minister, Geert Bourgeois, insisted that the move was not a cynical ploy to make money out of war but to invest in “peace tourism”. The area around Ypres expects a sharp increase in visitors for the Centenary between 2014-2018, with British visitors expected to be the largest contingent of tourists.
