An article in The Independent highlights concerns that the First World War Centenary “is set to trigger a boom in the underworld memorabilia market with thieves targeting museums during four years of high-profile commemorations”.
Increasing interest in items such as medals, combined with the high price of silver and “poorly-protected exhibitions, battlefield sites and wrecks” could mean that items are “at risk of plundering for profit”.
