Edith Cavell Centenary – wreath laying at London memorial

A ceremony takes place at Edith Cavell’s memorial in central London on October 12th 2015 to mark the centenary of her execution in occupied Belgium.

Nurses from the Royal London Hospital and members of the armed forces will be participating in the event at St Martin’s Place, just off Trafalgar Square. More details from the Cavell Nurses Trust.

The nearby church of St Martin-in-the-Fields is hosting an exhibition and programme of live events, organised by Unity Arts, exploring Edith Cavell’s legacy. Further information here.

The British nurse was condemned to death by a German court martial in October 1915 for helping 200 Allied soldiers escape to the neutral Netherlands.

**Peterborough will be among UK cities remembering Edith Cavell. She received some of her schooling in the city and a hospital is named after her.

A walk from the town hall to the cathedral starts at 6.45am for two minutes silence at 7am, the time of her dawn execution by a firing squad in Brussels.
