The Commonwealth War Graves Commission(CWGC) has confirmed that plans to work with the Flemish Government in the lead up to the centenary of the First World War in 2014 will go ahead.
Under the agreement, signed in November 2010, the Commission and Flemish Government will work together on a number of projects that will help manage and preserve First World War heritage. This includes cemeteries and memorials that represent the Province of West Flanders.
The Commission will include a programme of work to rebuild cemetery walls, as well as local and regional initiatives that will support the many visitors to the area. However, the Commission has decided to put on hold plans to construct a visitor and headstone-engraving centre in Flanders. Following more detailed discussions with their Flemish partners, the Commission decided that its resources would be better focused by improving the level and quality of information available to visitors at a regional and local level.
As the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 2014 approaches, the Commission’s work with the Flemish Government and with several major museums in Flanders will form a central part of the country’s commemoration plans.
