Centenary exhibition to mark CWGC’s founding

An exhibition to mark the Centenary of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission opens at Brookwood Military Cemetery in the UK on 20 May 2017.

Brookwood, near Woking in Surrey, is CWGC’s largest site in Britain.

Entitled For Then, For Now, Forever, the exhibition will run until 19 November 2017.

A touring version is planned for Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and South Africa as part of a programme of projects commemorating the 100th anniversary of CWGC’s founding in May 1917.

From its origins during the Great War, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has grown into a global operation commemorating 1.7 million men and women of both world wars at 23,000 sites in more than 150 countries.

It arose from the vision of Sir Fabian Ware,a former teacher, schools’ administrator, journalist and businessman who served as the commander of a British Red Cross mobile unit during WW1.

There’ll be a series of special events accompanying the first week of the Brookwood exhibition – with talks from CWGC staff and guest speakers on topics ranging from horticulture to history. The events are ticketed – but free. See CWGC for details.
