Sing UK is bringing together a chorus of young people from four of the former combatant nations of the First World War – Belgium, England, France and Germany – for a special Centenary concert.
The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace, composed by Welshman Karl Jenkins, will be performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall on the 28th September 2014.
A chorus of 600 young people will be drawn from schools in Bedfordshire, Cambridge, London, Leicestershire and Worcestershire in England, and three youth choirs from mainland Europe.
They are: the Clari Cantus Youth Choir from Leuven in Belgium; Les Jeunes Voix de Cannes from France; and Osnabrücker Jugendchor (the Osnabruck Youth Choir) in Germany.
The choir will be accompanied by the Royal Philharmonia Orchestra in “a spirit of peace, through the internationally common language of music”.
David Whelton, Managing Director Philharmonia Orchestra said that: “the Philharmonia Orchestra is delighted to be working in partnership with Sing UK to stage this ambitious project, giving young singers from across the UK and Europe access to the finest performance opportunities and inspiring the next generation of singers with a life-long passion for music”.
Anne Renshaw, Sing UK’s Operations Director, said that: “The young singers of the specially formed Centenary Chorus will come together in a spirit of international friendship and peace for this performance. Already there is a great buzz and sense of unity and purpose amongst them, ties that will be strengthened as a result of this centenary project. Audiences can look forward to further performances from the The Centenary Chorus during the 2014-18 period commemorating the landmark anniversaries of the First World War.”
