Hundreds of pledges have been received in support of a call to sow swathes of poppies commemorating the final year of the First World War Centenary.
The Ribbon of Poppies project was originally launched with the aim of covering the UK in a ‘carpet of crimson’ in 2018 to remember all those who served in the Great War.
But the venture has won international backing in its opening weeks.
Individuals and groups are being encouraged to take part, simply by planting poppy seeds on a pocket of land.
Some 600 confirmed pledges have been received to date, stretching as far afield as California, Indonesia and the Falkland Islands.
In the UK, members of the Scout and Guide movements have led the way in supporting the project.
The Ribbon of Poppies has been initiated by The Memorial ‘Mob’, a group dedicated to creating memorials to the uniformed services.
‘All we wish to do is to create a living legacy to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice’, it says. ‘So wherever you are, you are most welcome to join the Ribbon.’
