Battle of Fromelles remembrance trail opens in France

Nord Tourism and Nord-Pas de Calais Regional tourism board have developed the Battle of Fromelles walking trail in France, to commemorate the 1916 battle.

The battle saw British Empire forces (British and Australian) clash with German troops. Australia suffered particularly heavy losses.

The walking trail was opened on the 19th July 2013.

From the Eglise de Fromelles, the trail moves past the l’Abbiette blockhouse, the Australian Memorial Park, VC Corner and the former infirmary or Trou Aid Post.

The walk ends at the Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery where 250 soldiers were re-interred in 2009, after their remains had been found in mass graves in the Bois des Faisans woods.

In recognition of Australia’s role and losses during the battle, Ric Wells, Australian’s Ambassador to France, unveiled five engraved tombstones identifying the Australian soldiers at Pheasant Wood during the walk.
