This New Zealand Museum in Auckland houses both galleries and the country’s ‘Halls of Memory’.
The Museum, “acts as a memorial and a site for New Zealanders lost in the war”. It houses two halls of memory within which the names of all those killed in major conflicts of the 20th Century are recorded and remembered. The Cenotaph and consecrated ground in front of the Museum are a touchstone of remembrance every Anzac Day (25 April).
Besides the Halls of Memory, the museum hosts exhibitions such as the new ‘In Memory’, curated by filmmaker Peter Kirby, that focuses on the impact war had on the country’s servicemen and women and on life at home. there is a ‘Scars on the Heart’ gallery on the human cost of 20th century conflicts. Besides these, there are many online resources such as a WW1 picture gallery, ‘Colours’ gallery on the history of the museum and a search facility for anyone trying to trace their New Zealander relatives who fought in the war.
