America commemorates Marne battle of Belleau Wood

On May 27, Memorial Day, a Centennial ceremony will be held at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery to commemorate the Battle of Belleau Wood.

The fighting on the Aisne and Marne rivers in 1918 was notable for the involvement of increasing numbers of US troops, taking part in counter-attacks in support of the French and British to contain Germany’s multiple spring offensives.

US Marines, in their first Great War campaign, launched repeated attacks to clear Belleau Wood near Château-Thierry.
