After the Russian Empire commenced its full mobilisation on the 31st, German declared war on Russia on the 1st August 1914.
The sequence of events on this day 100 years ago was as follows:
1) Russia does not reply to the German midday ultimatum to stand down its mobilisation.
2) French mobilisation is ordered at 3.40pm.
3) Germany orders general mobilisation at 5pm, and declares war on Russia at 7.10pm.
4) Belgium announces her intention of upholding her neutrality.
