The Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia on Tuesday 28th July 1914 – a hundred years ago today.
The declaration was signed at 11am by Emperor Franz Joseph – and a copy was sent by telegraph to the Serbian Foreign Ministry.
The signing took place in the study of the Imperial Villa at Bad Ischl in Upper Austria, the Emperor’s summer residence.
The declaration was as a response to the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo just over a month earlier.
