The UK’s National Heritage Memorial Fund has provided £1 million to help save the final surviving First World War warship The Belfast Telegraph has reported.
The British light cruiser, HMS Caroline, which is currently moored in Belfast, will now be the focus of repair efforts by the National Museum of the Royal Navy, which was awarded the funds.
The plan is that the ship will be ready to serve as a museum in time for the centenary of the Battle of Jutland – the crucial naval engagement between the British Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet and the Imperial German Navy’s High Seas Fleet that took place in 1916.
