The Australian reports that the British Minister for Sport, Hugh Robertson, has confirmed that the Gallipoli Campaign will be marked at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in 2014.
The closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is on the 3rd August 2014. The First World War began on 28th July 1914 with the Austro-Hungarian declaration of war on Serbia. Britain declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914.
The significance of world leaders convening in Glasgow for the Games, and on the Centenary of the start of the First World War, has led to expectations that the closing ceremony of the Games will be a focal point for commemorations.
The Australian reports that the British Sports Minister, on a visit to the Australian War Memorial, reassured his hosts that the Australian role in the Gallipoli landings will not be ignored:
“We don’t want Gallipoli forgotten in the centenary of the Western Front activities and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will recognise the part the Commonwealth played in that”.
