The BBC reports that the English town of Hartlepool will be marking the Centenary of the First World War with a £400,000 programme of events.
Hartlepool was bombarded by the Germany Navy on the 16th December. It was the first major attack on British soil during the conflict. Hartlepool Borough Council’s senior WWI project officer, Katie Hammond, said: “A whole generation of young people… need to be reminded of what happened and how that changed and shaped the social fabric of the country that they live in today.”
